LORD NELSON BREWERY PUB Ale : Jan. 26th, '09 Of The Lord Nelson Brewery's " Old Admiral " Orangle Label _ Sydney Australian 100% Natural Ale

It's a really cold day / now night here in northern Virginia where I live and I earlier witnessed on our cul de sac snow covering only half of it and not the other : right down the middle! That blew my mind, so to speak and I am just recovering from the magnitude of having to mentally deal with this odd occurrence here at home on my day-off. You just never know , do you? You just can never envision certain things either, can you?

That's okay : you just " deal " and move on. I have, somewhat. It' still a very funny / odd thing to have happened here. Anyway, Blair, one of the owners of the LORD NELSON PUB/ BREWERY and HOTEL gave both Chris and I two of his bottles of beer to bring home when we left his hotel in The Rocks last February ( around the twentieth , I believe ) 2008. It was still summer there in Australia and beautiful.

I thought that perhaps we were bringing the beers back to get them approved for purchase by the Country Vintners importing company now located in Ashland, Virginia wher my college Randolph-Macon is located and where I spent four happy years. What an interesting recent development for me to be digesting these days, like snow on only half of our sul de sac?!?

I have been hanging on to these beers now for almost a year and decided finally tonight o drink this orange-labelled " Old Admiral ". It's so creamy and smooth and frothy and light and bright and airy with hardly a bite or a burn, a yank or a twist, or any sharpness at all in sight! I can't even imagine it any other way. I've been enjoying it immensely now for the last hour and still have a few sips to linger over. Nice.

I started drinking it around 6 PM or so while I started to prepare our family supper. I do this every Sunday and Monday, giving my wife a break which I know she enjoys. Tonight we had some steaks that my mother gave me for this past Christmas 2008 : two t-bones.

My wife drank some of the Spanish white wine , a mic called The Spanish Quarter of 60% Chardonnay and 40% Albarino that is rich and soft and smooth as can be. It's lovely to drink all by itself : medium-bodied, no bite, no burn, refreshing and dry without any edges or tartness. To some it would not be dry or steely enough : to others, most it is simply " just right ".

I had no red wine and perhaps would have enjoyed some if I had had a bottle already open. It occurred to me, however, that to drink one of these two LORD NELSON BREWERY ( the ales/ beers are brewed from malt hops yeast & water, hotel@lordnelson.com.au www.lordnelson.com.au 6.1% Alc/Vol ) ales would be a real treat and would remind me of the marvelous split-day that Chris Pigott and I had enjoyed in Blair's fine establishment and company, too. Blair, a good friend Of LONGVIEW Vineyard's ( Adelaide, South Australia ) past-owner now, Duncan took really fabulous care of us while we stayed under his roof. Thank you Blair and thank you Duncan. These were really special moments for the both of us there in Sydney, Australia. : moments that I will find very hard if not impossible to ever forget.

I just had my last sip : it stats so fresh and full and creamy and rich on the palate. The flavors all marry so incredibly well together and circle around my tongue and then throat, esophagus, too and just land so perfectly to rest contentedly in my stomach. The bit of hops and the wheat flavors are brought so clearly into focus as this is happening : almost as if the ale becomes more centered, more Kodak-perfect in clarity and focus ( almost, too as it enlarges briefly, like so many balloons of flavors being releases in sync and exploding so nicely like a wondrous fireworks display of flavors in my body .... it's inspiring, really. I'm pleasured, pleased, smiling, contented and feeling " the warmth " , the moment : my moment nicely spread now over this last hour.

Here are some pictures that I took while in the pub downstairs of the Lord Nelson Hotel and Brewery where these fine beers ( five or six I believe ) are made just feet away from where we tasted , Chris and I with the young Aussie brew master. Hope you like these photos. I will soon take a picture of this empty bottle and include it, too. The artwork is excellent on these two bottles I have : one orange and one yellow.

I see by looking back at these pictures that I included the beer/ale bottles in them and so you can see them now. I also included a cross-section from the entire afternoon we spent there in Blair's company instead of going out and sightseeing. I think the young man pictured ( not the brew master in the green shirt ) is Duncan's son from an earlier marriage I believe. We met him, too : very nice. They all were from the young lady behind the bar to our waitress pictured with Blair. Also, there's a lady pictured in the office upstairs ( she takes care of the office ) with the wholesaler that ended up joining us for lunch before heading off to sell more wine. The office is where we had to climb up three floors to reach : hard work with bags, good exercise any way you put it! And I've also included the picture outside the hotel with Blair, his wife and one of their two cute children as they headed off to do their morning activities that day.

Blair had the bartender pour all of their beers for me to try, side-by-side to decide which one I liked best to drink that one. It was a fun exercise for me that I enjoyed thoroughly. Bair said that he did not do this for everyone and I appreciated that a lot.

Also notice on the beer board at the bar that the first beer listed in the Quayle Ale for Vice President Dan Quayle that actually was there at the Lord Nelson Hotel / Brewery.

Happy New Year to you Blair, your wife and two children. Come see us here sometime soon. Let us wine, beer and dine you as well as you did us. TONY

The Aussie Walk / At Camden Yards, Baltimore,MD With One Kiwi Lady, Too : And Two Americans 2008 - Fun Leg Motion

Here are some striking pictures of us at Camden Yards baseball park this past late September, 2008 on Sunday after a great in-store tasting with Rob, Pete, Nick, Liz, Ed, Alan and Barbara. What fun, what memories. The Orioles lost and yet we had a blast! These pictures are just as we were leaving to return home to taste some excellent old vintages I had at home as well as to cook some honkin' steaks ( Nick did them perfectly ) .

The wineries represented were : LOOSE END, WEST CAPE HOWE, LONGVIEW, VINACEOUS , PICARDY ( Dan had to fly home to his cute daughter's birthday celebration but was very much with us anyway ): and from New Zealand LAWSONS ( Barbara took the day off to rest but was still very much with us as she had been here at Cleveland Park Wines & Spirits ( 202-363-4265  www.clevelandparkwine.com ) in our nation's capitol the day before tasting here wines.

These pictures just "speak " to me on some level. I love them, I do.   Enjoy them. It's Saturday evening here at the store in Cleveland Park at 7:30 PM on .  TONY

Pictures I Took Of Two Early Morning Poems I Wrote At WEST CAPE HOWE Winery in Denmark, Western Australia 2/12 /08

Hope you enjoy these two poems that I wrote in the morning of February 12th, 2008 at the WEST CAPE HOWE WINERY in Denmark, western Australia. I wrote and also drew some on this morning as I walked around the grounds while we waited for Gavin Berry to show up. Chris Pigott and Nick Stacey were all there waiting to start the day.

I didn't wait, of course. My day was already started as I was quite inspired by the sights, smells, etcetera before me. I loved the Sauvignon Blanc vines and grapes there just off of the wrap-around veranda. I loved how the vines grew like crazy and I drew this and took pictures, too.

I was seeing it all for the first time and my eyes and other senses were eating it all up like there was no tomorrow!

Cheers, it's Sunday, January 11th, 2009 here at home in northern Virginia at 1:02 PM as I type this and remember these glorious times spent in the company of Nick, Chris, Gavin and the wonderful staff there and their families of WEST CAPE HOWE.

This was just a moment, but it was my moment and for the moment that I had it was " the only moment ". I know, I know, sounds trite or obvious but we can all learn from really experiencing each and every moment because they are ours and really the only ones we have. It was a beautiful morning there, too.

I wrote the two poems on the white stationary from the Ocean Beach Hotel in Cottlesloe, Perth , western Australia where Chris Pigott and I stayed for two nights before driving down to Denmark with Nick. He was our chauffeur and what a glorious chauffeur he was!

Thanks a million! TONY

Rob Gibson, Owner-Winemaker of GIBSON & LOOSE END, Barossa, South Aussie Wines Visits Washington D.C. Late 2008 : Leaves Lasting Words / Impressions

It was great to see Rob Gibson and the rest of the Aussie crew as well as owner Barbara Lawson of LAWSON wines in Marlborough, New Zealand. They came ( all four of them ) and left lasting impressions on me. It was a great weekend's visit ( I think the last weekend of September 2008 if memory serves me well ) with an in-store wine-tasting as well as an Orioles baseball game at Camden yards and later a dinner/wine tasting at my home in northern Virginia.

Rob made a special point to speak to me briefly during each and every one of these three activities. Oh, actually there were four because after our in-store tasting on Saturday night ( the evening - day that our customers Jennifer and John tied the knot ! ) we afterwards went over to Chef Geoff's in downtown Washington D.C. ( across from the National Theater I believe ). Though he spoke briefly to me each time his few words were like honey to a starving man.

At Chef Geoff's restaurant Rob came up to me after the dinner and said simply two things  that went straight to my heart and touched me as few words have. He complemented me for the excellent in-store tasting ( Nick Stacey had already done this at the other head of the table from where I say when he toasted me - thanks Nick- loved that, too )  and also made a comment about his wine-tasting operation back home in Barossa. He said that at times he would wonder how to accomplish something there, how to do it ? He then added that he would try and imagine what I would do, how would I handle it? Wow Rob, that's really nice. Thanks for the complement. I love it, really I do. I'm glad you think that highly of me and my way of operating. That means a whole lot to me , one hippie to another.

The other comment that you made was at my home when we did our dinner/wine-tasting at home. You immediately went and examined all of the bottles with Liz not far behind. You took a lot of time tasting, evaluating, and comparing the various wines that I poured ( American from California, and French, too ). They all had lots of bottle-age and so I wanted you all to enjoy some of my old treasures that I have waited to taste and enjoy with special people like the lot of you fine Aussies!

You can see all the wines in the pictures when you enlarge them on your screen. Anyway, when you were about to leave Rob you told me that it was one of the best tastings that you had ever been to. That really touched me to the core and I am thrilled to have been able to offer this to you Rob and to the rest of you that all took great pains and great care when both Chris Pigott and I visited Australia this past February ( 9th-21st I believe ). This was " pay-back " time as far as I was concerned, my small way of showing some of my thanks and appreciation for those two great summertime weeks in Australia.

I have lots more to say and will very soon but want to post this now so that you may all enjoy these fun photos now.

Thanks Rob, Barbara, Liz, Nick, Jeremy, Peter and Chris : you are all the best. Here's to all the great times and work that we have already done and to many / much more in 2009!

Happy New Year 2009 to One & to All of Us : we need it desperately as we get through these trying times and sort things out and find once again our places in this incredible world of ours. Yes, I'm in love with life, have and always been.     TONY
